YAM - Yet Another Mailer (#2) - Attachments with long filenames (#60) - Message List

Attachments with long filenames
 solved

After 9 years of use I noted a few days ago that YAM truncates the filename of any attached file at the 31th character (if there is an extension .xyz, the filename is truncated at the 29th character and the extension is lost).

This is inconsistent with alien mailers (e.g. Outlook Express), that accept long filenames. And if the filename extension (e.g. .rtf) is lost, then PC antivirus programs soon mark the message as potentially dangerous (when they don't delete it directly).

In the Changelog I read:

2003-03-08 Jens Langner <Jens.Langner@light-speed.de>
* YAM_RE.c: fixed bug #680450 where attachment filesnames were always truncated to 32bytes. Now YAM should leave it to the filesystem to support longer filenames or not. This should also fix the truncation of attachment (file)names on a mail forward.

It seems that my version of YAM still has the problem. Or maybe I am unable to find some related well-hidden configuration switch...

The problem occurs on my Pegasos II G4 with YAM 2.5 MorphOS and YAM 2.5 OS3 (all the most recent night builds); and also occurs on my Amiga 4000 060/PPC with YAM 2.4p1.

Filesystem used in both computers: PFS3 set to the maximum filename length (107 characters). I have no problems with any other program that is able to manage long filenames.

Cheers, DoctorMorbius_FP

Thanks for the information, but I have to say that I never checked it with PFS3 and don't know how PFS3 handles long filenames. I also have to dig into the sources once I am back home again and check what my fix in 2003 was actually done and see if there is still a minor bug that prevents you from using long filenames and also test it on my A1 where I have SFS running.

But please be so kind and prepare an example email for me which actually shows the problems you are facing. This could help me in investigating what is still wrong at your side.

OK. I have sent you an e-mail message with some files attached. All their filenames are truncated, and in the message I specify the original filenames. I also added some further information that maybe can be helpful.

Tested the YAM25dev-MorphOS.lha nightly build dated 23-Jan-2005, and everything works fine. No truncated filenames! Thank you, Jens.

No problem, luckily it wasn't that hard to fix it :)
