Active Tickets	10	DST changes *every* time in main window listview	user interface	2.5	YAM 2.8p1	bug	somebody	accepted	2010-03-03T15:32:05+01:00	2013-03-10T14:47:28+01:00	"Today when most European countries switched to daylight saving time (DST), I noticed a bug in YAM25dev (am using the version from 27 March for m68k on AMIGA OS3.9BB2):

I have the main window listview configured to show the message date. After switching to DST, all times were increased by one hour, including the ones of mails received during standard time.

This is easy to reproduce:

Begin with DST, GMT+2 in my case, note the times displayed for some mails in a folder received during before (GMT+1) and after (GMT+2) the DST switch. Then uncheck the DST switch in the YAM config-""First steps"". All times are changed.

Of course one can always open the mail to get the correct time including time zone info form the Date header field, and one may thus argue that this is a case for a feature request. However, I consider this a bug.

Active Tickets	7	Handling of charsets (e.g. UTF-8) when using external editor.	charset handling	2.5	YAM 2.9	bug	somebody	accepted	2010-03-03T15:10:34+01:00	2012-12-05T22:24:08+01:00	"When receiving an email with a charset that is not supported by the font system (I think, I don't know how YAM is detecting this charset), YAM shows a question mark for every character that is not standard ASCII. When YAM passes this mail to an external program or saves as a file it still replaces the characters with question marks. YAM should not replace these characters in these situations.

For example, my friend recently sent me an email in UTF-8 with an attachment. Their MUA decided to package the text as base64. In YAM when I read this mail I get ""????? ?? ????"" etc in the message window. If I save the displayed message I get the same ""????? ?? ????"" etc, if I save the raw message I get base64. If I try to reply and call an external editor that can handle the character coding, YAM passes it the ""????? ?? ????"" text instead of the original text.

Just FYI, this did not occur in YAM 2.4.

Active Tickets	9	Wrong UTF-8 Support	charset handling	2.5	YAM 2.9	bug	somebody	accepted	2010-03-03T15:29:03+01:00	2012-12-05T22:25:24+01:00	"Hi Develoers

I think YAM does not support the UTF-8 encoding correct.

Here is a Step by Step example: 1. Write a new Mail (Type and To and Subject). 2. Switch to the Options Tab. 3. Select UTF-8 as Charset. 4. Switch back to the Message Tab. 5. Type some non ASCII Letters (e.g. the Euro Sign and ). 6. Click ""Hold"". 7. Switch to the Outguing Folder. 8. Select the Mail you just wrote. 9. Click Read in the Toolbar. 10. Look at the Content-Type it's text/plain; charset=UTF-8 11. But in the Mail you see ""? ? ???"" but it should "" ""

The cause it that YAM does not encode the Mail to UTF-8 if you click on the ""Hold"" Button. If you then open the Mail for Read YAM seems to try to decode the UTF-8 Mail but can't find any UTF-8 sequence and you see the question marks.

Hope anybody can fix that...

TIA

Best Regards Frank (Opi) Weber

Right now it's impossible. It would be necessary to generate an hidden unique ID or use the full path reference to associate filter move function to folder instead of just the folder name.

By the way, this reference to an hidden ID would be far better and would be more flexible than name reference. When a user will change a folder name, it would not be necessary to change all filter associated to this folder.

This would mean that I could filter mails from certain people belonging to a named group in my address book in the same folder. This gets useful e.g. if different people are talking about similar subjects but without using a mailing-list. It would also make setting filters much easier instead of defining a new filter for every person/subject/whatsoever by just tearing the person into the address book group. Think of special folders for collecting all kind of invioces into one folder, newsletters or mails from your financial institutes, others for everything related to your career (applications and such) and yet others for all friends. So when a sender is contained in one of those groups all mails by him go to the defined folder.

== Enhancement recommendation ==
It should be easy to change that to different levels.
E.g. all mails which are already marked get Priority 0.
All future mails could get an M1...M9 into the filename to differentiate the levels.
The level could be displayed with a picture like now but with a number into the picture.
The mark menu should get an sub menu for the different levels.
What do you think about that?

While this is a good idea for some folders (like incoming, or any folder where I keep current on all messages), for others it is not. I follow a number of mailing lists in which I read messages only sporadically, and I keep several months of messages online. With such groups, it takes an extra couple of seconds to open the folder because of scanning for read/unread messages, and then I have to manually scroll back to the current messages to see what's new. I don't want to manually mark all messages as read, because it's an extra step and because it is useful for me to know which old messages I've looked at and which I haven't.

Could this process of scanning for the oldest unread message upon opening a folder be made optional on a folder-by-folder basis? That would give us all the best of both worlds.

For example, if I enter a name under the ""From field"", that name disappears from the string gadget for most other searches, like Subject, Message Body, Whole Message, etc. With the exception of ""Message size"", these are all still strings, and I wish YAM would stop second-guessing whether my data applies in this or that situation.

For example, you could put in a progress bar which show the status of the packing or e.g. a counter in percent.

I, for one, use LZX to pack smaller or larger files to a mail. The larger ones do need quite a while.

Could someone implement it (if it`s possible) in one of the next versions? Please!

I know I can change the order by opening the mail below the one I want to delete, then do <-, then delete. Then the step is reversed and YAM moves up.

Currently there is no option to search for your term in all of the indexed headers only. Although there is a ""Message headers"" option, this means every message needs to be searched which is very time consuming with a very large collection of messages.

It would be very useful to add a ""Indexed message headers"" option and change the current Message headers item to ""All message headers"" to clearly differentiate. Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to place the ""Indexed message headers"" option below the bolded header options too, and ""All message headers"" below that.

So it is very common that people send around a mail where they say that they are going to attach something, but suddenly they send out the mail without any attachment at all.

Therefore, other email clients like Thunderbird 3+ now have a feature to try to identify semi-automatically that the author of an email is going to attach a file while writing an email. In TB3 this seems to be done by searching for common words like ""attachment"", ""Anhang"", ""pdf"" or other words (have to be analysed/found in the TB code).

IMHO it would be a very nice thing to have a similar feature in YAM so that a warning appears similar to an empty subject warning right before a mail is sent out. However, we have to find out what TB3 is really doing to identify the case of reminding for an attachment."	damato

 1. despite cluttering the main YAM directory (YAM:) with all mail folder directories, it would be better to have a global YAM:folders directory in which new and existing folders are moved/created in.
 2. The default folders (outgoing/incoming/sent/spam, etc.) should be renamed (the directories) to be compatible to what other mail clients (e.g. Thunderbird) name them. This would make it more easy to integrate IMAP support in future. This would me to rename ""outgoing"" to ""Outgoing"" or ""sent"" to ""Sent"". And also rename ""Spam"" to ""Junk"".

This would of course also require to implement an automatic folder move operation once 2.7 is started and found old default folders lying in the YAM: directory instead of having them in the YAM:folders subdirectory as well as automatically renaming e.g. ""Spam"" to ""Junk"" and so on.

The current configuration soley relies on a global ""struct Config"" structure which is directly accessed from throughout the whole YAM source code. This has several drawbacks and should be completely changed.

== Background analysis ==
First of all the current configuration source code (including the GUI part) should be changed into an internal MUI custom class (using GenClasses). Then struct Config should be abadoned and instead accessor and mutator functions be added to retrieve and set the values of a certain config option (e.g. via string-based config option names). Furthermore, the configuration structure should carry information about the type (boolean, integer, string, etc.) of the variable so that the Load and Save config function can interate through this structure getting rid of the tons of ""else if()"" branches currently implemented in YAM_COs.c.

A common failure when using YAM seems to be that users misconfigure their path settings of new custom folders so that they end up in an incorrect path setup which might delete important files, thus data.

== Background analysis ==
The problem seems to be that users currently have the complete freedom of moving different folders to completely different root pathes by entering a complete directory path including the disk identifier. The solution for this common problem is to limit users in only entering a directory name for a folder which is always relative to the mail directory configured in the user configuration file (PROGDIR:.users)

== Implementation recommendation ==
Care have to be taking in how the user configures the directory name in the folder configuration as it should be prevented that he enters characters which are not allowed in directory names (e.g. ':', '/', etc.). Furthermore it should be investigated if the directory could be automatically generated via the folder name if possible."	damato

To finalize the UpdateCheck mechanism it should be possible to not only download the latest update archive directly. It should also be possible to install the update right away seeing YAM being closed, the updated files/binaries updated and then YAM being restarted to finalize the update.

== Background analysis ==
While for a simple updatecheck mechanism downloading the update lha archive might be enough a better approach would be if the update could also be automatically installed instead of just downloading the archive and relying on the user to install the update properly. Several major problems with that approach seem to prevent the implementation however:

 1. We have to find a way to close YAM remotely (e.g. via ARexx) and restart it after the files from the update archive were installed.
 2. We have to standardize the update archive to also be able to handle larger update jumps (e.g. if a YAM 2.8 user want to update to YAM 3.0 directly without having to install 2.9 first)
 3. We have to take care not to overwrite files that have been changed by the user (e.g. by using md5sum or similar)
 4. How should third-party updates (e.g. mcc classes, etc.) be treated?

== Implementation recommendation ==
An ideal implementation would present an ""Install Update"" button instead of ""Download"" in the update notification window. If the user presses this button YAM will be closed, the update installed (possibility non-interactive, with creating backups, etc.) and afterwards YAM being restarted to finalize the update."	damato

The ARexx command LISTFREEZE MAILS does not freeze the mail list anymore (newer mails added are shown, as well as selections).

Also, there is a race problem with ARexx scripts, the MAILSTATUS command, and the ""auto mark-as-read"" feature. By the time the Arexx script make a mail current with SETMAIL, change its status to - lets' say - ""U"" (unread), and finish doing something with the current mail before making another mail current, the mail that was marked as unread is then marked as read by the auto mark timeout (thus 'sabotaging' the MAILSTATUS U command). I suggest that the 'LISTFREEZE MAILS' command also inhibit the ""auto mark-as-read"" behavior until a 'LISTUNFREEZE MAILS' command is reached.

Active Tickets	389	YAM locks up or crashes when un-iconifying	user interface	nightly build	YAM 2.8p1	bug new	2013-02-24T04:20:55+01:00	2013-03-04T09:04:54+01:00	"This problem occurs when runnning YAM on my A3000 with a Cyberstorm Mk III (68060 @ 50 MHz), running under OS 3.9.2 and MUI 3.8. I have the latest version of all the MUI components that YAM uses.

The problem occurs with both YAM 2.8, and with the 19-Feb nightly build. It happens both with the default theme, and with the MagicWB theme that I normally use (with the corrected images per ticket 386). I am running YAM on a MUI custom screen, an 8-bit colormapped Picasso 96 screen.

The problem is that YAM either crashes, or just locks up when un-iconifying. To demonstrate the problem, I just run YAM and wait for it to open its user interface window on the custom MUI screen. I then click the MUI ""iconify"" gadget in the window border, and wait for the icon to appear on the Workbench screen. I then double-click the icon. The custom screen opens, but the window never does.

Most of the time this lockup is not accompanied by any Cyberguard hits. Sometimes the system seems to still be stable, while other times Workbench or something else crashes later on, and when I reboot I get a flashing red screen until I cycle the power. This suggests that memory has been corrupted.

Occasionally I do get a string of Cyberguard hits -- reads and writes of low memory by exec, the graphics library, and the picture datatype -- similar to what was discussed in ticket 386. It's not clear if these are the cause of the problem, or are just reactions to bad data.

If I tell YAM to restart, which appears to perform the same closing and re-opening of the user interface, there is no problem.

Currently redirected but not yet sent mails can be moved back to the Drafts folder for further editing. However, YAM is not yet aware that it has to handle such mails in a different manner like it did originally.

== Analysis ==
Mails to be edited must be analyzed before the write window with the corresponding GUI elements in created. Currently the window is created first and after that the mail is analyzed and then the GUI is filled accordingly. But at this time the decision whether the write window has to appear as normal write window (write, edit, reply, forward) or as a redirect window has been done already.

== Enhancement recommendation ==
Either restructure the process to analyze the mail ahead of creating the write window or relayout the write window in normal mode to be suitable for redirecting mails as well, i.e. disable or hide all GUI elements which are not needed."	thboeckel
