#359 closed bug (fixed)YAM 2.8 has connection issues with WinUAE 2.x
Description
Hi
I'm having a bit of a problem with YAM 2.8 dev (multiple versions) in WinUAE. The problem is that I can't send or receive email from my mail server. First I thought it was something with WinUAE, so I tested with 2.3.3, 2.4.0, 2.4.1 and the latest 2.5.0 RC but to no avail. So I fired up WireShark and sniffed and I saw the problem, YAM connected to random ports when trying to send or receive email but not when checking for software updates. Then I thought maybe it's because I'm running this WinUAE in a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop), so I started in to Boot Camp and tested there, but still the same problem. Then I thought maybe I should downgrade to YAM 2.7 release and what do you know, it works sending and receiving !! So something has happened with 2.8 that doesn't rhyme well with WinUAE. Since I don't use WinUAE that often I do not know with which 2.8 dev version it started. I can only tell that YAM 2.8 is definitely working perfectly here on WinUAE running on Windows Vista and Windows 7. No network problems whatsoever. comment:4 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
I have tried disabling some patches, running a new YAM in a new directory with config from scratch, with no change. comment:5 follow-up: ↓ 6 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb

Replying to pbobbenb:
Sorry, but I don't really see on the log of your tests with YAM 2.8 that there are attempts to connect to a POP3 server at all. So can you please use the debug version of YAM 2.8 and start YAM from the command-line with the "DEBUG" option added please. That will output the TCP/IP traffic on the command-line for debug purposes. In addition you could also run the following command on the shell before starting YAM:
setenv yamdebug tcp
then capture the serial output and attach it to this bug report please after having attempted a pop3 connection with YAM 2.8 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:7 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
Added debug log. comment:8 Changed 6 months ago by damato
Well, the only strange thing I can spot from your log file is the following: 01:D: Connection.c:836:Host 'mail.wigilius.se': 01:D: Connection.c:837: Officially: 'wigilius.se' 01:D: Connection.c:840: Alias: 'mail.wigilius.se' 01:D: Connection.c:842: Type: 'AF_INET' 01:D: Connection.c:846: Address: '192.168.0.208' ... 01:D: Connection.c:1006:trying TCP/IP connection to host 'mail.wigilius.se' with IP 192.168.0.208 on port 110
After that YAM tries to open a POP3 connection (with port 101) to "mail.wigiluis.se" which (as you can see) has the IP address 192.168.0.208. And that's actually the stange thing as the 192.168.x.x address is an internal IP address. Are you sure that it should connect to that address? Here mail.wigilius.se has the IP address 213.21.125.30. Can you please check your DNS settings in WinUAE? As you are running WinUAE within Parallels Desktop it might be that Parallels Desktop provides an internal DNS server which simply provides the wrong IP address. Why YAM 2.7 seems to be fine here is not clear. But you could try to get a TCP debug log using YAM 2.7 (simply run "YAM DEBUG" from command-line when starting it) and then you could check if it connects to the same internal IP address with success. comment:9 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
Well, the address for mail.wigilius.se is 192.168.0.8, since it's on my local network. I have tried using the ip number as well but that doesn't work either, hmm think I will do another debug log with ip number instead and see what that produces.
About Parallels Desktop giving out wrong DNS, that shouldn't be the case since it doesn't work in Boot Camp (Windows 7) either...
Can also mention that I'm running a DNS server on my server, so it knows where mail.wigilius.se is.
I'm wondering now if YAM does some other DNS MX lookup or something that 2.7 don't and that why it fails ?? Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbChanged 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:10 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
debug_log2 is connection attempt with ip number.
debug27_log is with yam 2.7 with hostname mail.wigilius.se comment:11 Changed 6 months ago by damato
Just added an lha with a special 2.8 version with additional debug info. Please try that one and catch debug info again. Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:12 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
New debug log. comment:13 Changed 6 months ago by damato
ups. the debug version seem to be completely broken related to outputting something readable. please retry with the new attached version. Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:14 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
Yeah, I thought it looked a bit odd comment:15 Changed 6 months ago by damato
Sorry, but this debug version was also partly broken. please try the newly attached one again (dbg3) Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:16 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb
New debug log... comment:17 Changed 6 months ago by damato
ok. thanks. that help to more understand the root of the problem. However, to fix things I need more information. So please run the newly attached debug version again. Changed 6 months ago by damatocomment:18 Changed 6 months ago by damato
After more searching I might have found the problem. So please also test the YAM-dbg5.lha version and send the debug log. Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenbChanged 6 months ago by pbobbenbcomment:19 Changed 6 months ago by pbobbenb

Ok, thanks for the extensive testing. This helped finding the problem and finally fixing it. Please also make sure you are going to test the nightly build comming next night and if there is still a problem please reopen this ticket. comment:22 Changed 6 months ago by thboeckel

Sorry, but I don't fully get the point here. What exactly do you mean by "YAM connected to random ports"? Do you mean you have configured e.g. to connect to a SMTP server to port 25 and you can see in wireshark that it connects to a different port instead? Is that correct? If so, can you please provide an excerpt of the wireshark log so that we can see what's going on?
